How to Overcome a Crushed Spirit or Broken Heart

“The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. A righteous man may have many troubles, but the LORD delivers him from them all” (Psalm 34:18-19).

What does it mean to be righteous? In the Old Testament, people were credited with righteousness like Abraham was because they believed God was a good God. Their righteousness had nothing to do with how they lived or behaved. Old Abe is used by Paul in Romans chapter 4, as an example of a man with strong faith, but you wouldn’t use Abe as an example of love. He pimped Sarah out to the king and had numerous other personal failures in his life. In spite of his weaknesses and shortcomings, he still managed to keep trusting in the fact that God was a good God and that what God had promised, He would bring to pass. Abe didn’t feel his personal failures or obvious character flaws disqualified him from experiencing God’s promises.

The above verse describes a righteous man with a crushed spirit who had many troubles. However, the Lord stood close by to deliver him from all of them. Often times, the Enemy uses our past to make us disqualify ourselves from seeing or expecting God’s deliverance from trouble. If you are a believer, you are righteous.(2 Corinthians 5:21) Hence, you are eligible for God’s help in your time of trouble. Your past failures and sins cannot disqualify you from the fact Jesus has qualified you.

Like old Abe, don’t lose sight of the fact that God is good, and He is always faithful even when we aren’t. At times, we all have situations or attacks that come to crush our spirits. However, God is always there to deliver us from any type of problems we encounter. Trust in His goodness for you and your spirit will be restored.
